Dr. Mike Marshall at Toledo Mud Hens Stadium in 2008, honoring the 1968 Triple-A Championship and his legacy in baseball biomechanics

Named in honor of the maverick former big-league pitcher, the “Dr. Mike Marshall Baseball Biomechanics Research Award” encourages the study of baseball biomechanics and its application in further understanding pitching, with emphasis on the risks, causes, and/or prevention of pitching injury.

SABR’s mission is to foster the study, discussion, and understanding of all aspects of baseball, and few baseball players have shown more intellectual curiosity about the game than Dr. Mike Marshall. His desire to learn more about how pitching worked was evident throughout his career as he discovered he could pronate his arm to throw a screwball and he adopted the use of training with weight balls as a coach. He embodied the goals of any baseball researcher: to learn more about the problem and contribute new knowledge to the field.
